YOUR SILENCE IS DEAFENING by The Cosmic Messenger
"We need to say loud and clear that we don't want big corporations enjoying preferred access to or government acting as the gatekeeper for independent journalism. And it means that we need to hold the government to its mandate to protect the freedom of the press, including independent and non-commercial news media." ... Dan Rather
Since I first broadcast several weeks ago the video announcement of former California prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's new book release "The Prosecution of George W. Bush For Murder" there's been a wave of favorable public sentiment advocating this be done before he departs office
No sooner was the declaration made than advanced excerpts from Scott McClellan's memoirs became available reinforcing Bugliosi's allegations the public was lied to about circumstances leading up to the disastrous war we now find ourselves immersed in.
McClellan refers to the "enablers" amongst us from both within the commercial media who allowed themselves to be manipulated and operatives of Bush's inner circle who contrived the carefully orchestrated campaign of deception which is still ongoing. Efforts to expose the Constitutional crisis has been dutifully suppressed by the the MSM who fear their profits will be jeopardized more than telling the truth to our citizens.
In the wake of these revelations some credible familiar faces have begun to reemerge led by journalists Bill Moyers and Dan Rather warning of the urgent danger to democracy if the current unstable situation is allowed to go unchallenged. They've been joined recently by former CIA analyst Ray McGovern and Congressman Dennis Kucinich from Ohio who maintain the conduct of the Bush junto are criminal offenses implying anyone, including the DNC leadership are guilty of obstruction of justice if Congress doesn't act.
Although the declared villainous behavior of our executive branch of government is appalling, equally scandalous is the way in which the national legislature has been bullied into neglecting its regulatory duties of the commercial press in quest of corporate globalization. They too, must face introspection if the nation's confidence is to be repaired and restored to its original design of coequal branches of government.
The untimely death of Tim Russert on June 13 is an opportunity for Congress to take a step in this direction by mandating the "Fairness Doctrine" be reestablished as a precept for which the journalism community be built. Russert, the host of NBC's "Meet The Press" before his passing was the prototype for what corporate media has become. No longer dedicated to reporting news from an impartial perspective, contemporary reporters/pundits/moderators survive by slanting coverage for whatever is most profitable for the conglomerate masters they serve.
In Russert's case, he earned respect from his contemporaries sometimes by what he failed to ask guests on "Meet The Press" because it wasn't politically correct or financially productive to do so. For example, he was accused of never pressuring politicians to account for NORAD's delayed reponse time to protect the airspace over our homeland during 9-11.
Another questionable judgment while in the national spotlight was whether former 2008 Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich had ever seen a UFO. It came at a time when he was serving as debate moderator and was considered by many in the progressive community as an attempt to smear the Ohio Congressman's character. In this instance, it was what Russert poised that cast doubt about his objectivity rather than his neglect of the issues.
It remains to be seen in the ensuing weeks how the legacy of Russert will be interpreted. Already the main stream media is canonizing him, citing his contribution to journalism and several awards. Congress may even pass a resolution and have it introduced into the public record while President Bush could bestow a posthumous medal to honor him. Anything's possible as this Administration departs but one thing is certain. Our democracy is in serious jeopardy if the next President, Congress and the Supreme Court fail to return to the Constitutional principles upon which this country was founded .
Note: My condolences go out to the Russert family in their time of mourning.
